Secrets of the Last Nazi
Since Secrets of the Last Nazi became Britain’s best-selling spy story in the summer, it has continued to become even more popular. After six months of growing sales, it reached the number 35 position on the main Amazon.com chart, and has now topped several sales categories in the US. Thanks to everybody who bought it, and especially to those of you who have written such wonderful reviews about it. Here are some nice comments from readers.

Is it ethical to give a book a satirical title, when you know some people might not get the joke? Find out by reading How to Make Good Decisions and Be Right All the Time. You can read the first chapters here (free), and there’s a summary of the whole book in sixty-two bullet-points, here.

An excellent read. I like the way it combines fact and fiction. I particularly like too be learn history from your book. It would make an excellent film.

Loved the Last Nazi, but you could get your editors to iron out some issues, particularly as the book goes on. Also, as a Scot, I took some exception with the reference to the Act of Union of 1801, which was when Ireland was annexed to Great Britain, ignoring the 1707 Act of Union, which brought Scotland under the rule of a United Kingdom parliament. The Irish came later.

Well, I impulsed bought both of your books. I always question my sanity when I do that and so I give thanks for an enjoyable character and perspective on world history. I’m anxiously waiting for more. Please continue writing your fictional books and perhaps have Myles and Helen honeymoon in Canada.

Dear Iain,
Once somebody in a position of authority instructed me as a child to be quiet. Once somebody suggested I slow down when it was percieved that I was exerting too much energy in one moment of time. These moments have stayed with me as an adult and I have always questioned their meaning. What of power and control in terms of entropy? What of entropy in terms of life, with reference to James Lovelocks Gaia hypothesis? Are we the Klemperen steersmen of Gaia, and whether or not we are, or we are simply a product of Gaia, blind to our own functions because of our tendancy to focus on the moment or to the timscale of a single moment. Having studied Structural Geology at Birkbeck I agree with you regarding the question of scientists being too unscientific too. twenty years ago I questioned my Tutor as to why reductionism is science seemed to prevail and whether its prevailance was too divicive for the egos of bickering scientists. Which leads me to thoughts, although conveyed here peicemeal. Is war a necessary function of Gaia – to drive forward our ability to control through technology and organisation our increasing ability to harness power, which increases in time and of which we may lose control due to open world feedback mechanisms. Thus the question – should politicians be more scientific? Should politicians not consider politics from the view point of entropy as a tool for planning a route for humanity to navigate the next 10,000 years? The dam in Ethiopia, the spectre of grain shortages following the commencement of the Ukraine war, resources and population against Lovelocks quest to understand Gaia and perhaps Edward O Wilson’s quest for a concilient understanding of the world, (and control and power). We can remain quiet, we can slow down to compliment entropy and the laws of thermodynamics in our lives, but can we stop in time before things go too far in Ukraine?
